Larimar Stone

Do you know Larimar history?

It is a variety of pectolite that is only found in the south of the Dominican Republic. It was discovered by the priest Miguel Domingo Fuertes, in the vicinity of Barahona, on November 22, 1916, then in 1976 Miguel Méndez and Norman Rilling, a geologist friend of the Peace Corps, searched for it and began to extract the stone.

At first they named her "Travelina", but Miguel Méndez decided to give her the name "Larimar" in honor of his own daughter.
By associating the nickname "Lari", of his daughter Larissa with the word "mar" (sea) for its intense blue color similar to the caribbean sea.

This gem, declared by the National Congress as a national stone in 2011, and dedicated to him on November 22 of each year as the "National Larimar Day", it is a symbol of Dominican identity.
